REMOVE THE PEST PROBLEM
The best solution is obviously to get rid of the carcass. Unfortunately, some rodents such as rats don’t always die in a visible spot. Since they are nocturnal animals, they like hiding in small spaces that offer little visibility.
If you are lucky to find the dead rat, you should place it in a plastic bag and ensure that you dispose of it promptly. Wear the right protective clothes and gloves such as a respirator or dust filter mask. This should be done whether the animal is alive or dead as rats can bring dangerous viruses and bacteria into the home. Therefore, you will need to thoroughly wash up even if you are wearing gloves.
If it’s not possible to remove the carcass or if you can’t locate it, you can apply deodorant or neutralizing agent to the whole area. However, you will need to ventilate the area by drilling into floors or walls. Therefore, you will still need to meet the cost of repair.
After cleaning the infected area with water and bleach, you will need to determine how rats are getting into the home. Bear in mind that rodents can be smart and can squeeze through very small areas. You will then need to cover holes and vents in foundations and walls. Check if there are gaps in loose pipes and roof soffits.
