Flea Control

Flea Control in Walnut Creek

Flea treatments are more commonly associated with pets, but if the pets reside within a home, flea treatment for your home may also be necessary.

Pets can acquire fleas from almost anywhere. The yard, the groomer, a park, or wildlife. Fleas can jump both high and long distances, so hitching a ride on a passing cat or dog is easy to accomplish. Once there, the fleas make the pet their new home base and begin laying eggs. This is where fleas in the home can become an issue. The eggs begin to fall off of the dog or cat and land in the carpet, rug, or another part of the home. Any area of the home or piece of furniture that your pet likes to rest on can become another home for fleas and their eggs.

Fleas are not limited to domestic animals. If you do not have a pet, but you have noticed evidence of fleas around your home, it might mean that you have wildlife or stray animals spending time near or around your home.

Because fleas are so often associated with pets and animals, flea control of pets goes hand in hand with flea control in the home. There are many different methods and treatments you can choose, so be sure to speak with your veterinarian about the most appropriate one.

For the home, vacuuming is a great place to start. Vacuuming brings fleas that are deep in the carpet to the surface. This can help future treatments penetrate and kill fleas. Remove all pet toys and blankets from the vicinity and sanitize them. Clean out underneath beds and other furniture so all areas can be sufficiently cleaned and vacuumed. Vacuuming removes a large portion of eggs and fleas, so be sure to rid your home of the vacuum bag when you are finished with that portion of the removal process.

Flea traps are simple for homeowners to use. They can be set in various parts of the home and are efficient in removing fleas that were not already removed by vacuuming or other methods. More than likely these treatments will help, but for a more thorough removal and peace of mind, it can be beneficial to use a chemical-based insecticide to remove the remnants of the flea infestation.

If you are in need of a thorough flea removal, you can contact Mighty Men Pest Control, for guidance and assistance. Flea infestations can be overwhelming and it can be difficult to track the process of removal. We would love to help you remove them in one clean sweep.

How To Get Rid of Fleas

Fleas are commonly associated with dogs and pets, but because many dogs and pets live within the confines of your home, fleas find their way inside. They may choose to move off of your pet and make their home in certain areas of your residence. Fleas can often be found in carpet or furniture or anywhere your animals may sleep or spend a significant amount of time. When fleas find their way into the fur or hair of your dog, they nestle in and make the animal’s surface their home. As your pet moves around your home, the fleas may jump or fall off. Fleas lay a significant amount of eggs during their lifespan and those eggs or the larvae can fall off of your pet and land in certain areas of your home. They are extremely small and hard to find, so you may not notice that you have a flea problem in your home until you start seeing some around your space or notice flea bites regularly on those who live in the home.

Fleas are tiny, but the impact they can have on you or your space is large. A cleanup of a flea infestation can be minor, but many times an extremely thorough cleaning is necessary to get rid of the problem for good.

How To Begin

To begin, if you have pets, it is beneficial to begin with their treatment if you have not already. If animals are present, they were probably the cause of the problem. Begin with their treatment according to the veterinarian and then move on to the home.

Vacuuming is always the smartest place to start when you have a flea infestation. You can use a regular vacuum to clean up areas the animals are commonly in or areas you have found yourself receiving bites from. A hand vacuum can be used to clean up hard-to-reach spaces.

Vacuuming commonly removes adult fleas or larvae first. Eggs sometimes are missed even after a thorough vacuuming and those will need to be taken care of to prevent further infestations. They will be adult fleas very soon. Vacuuming has been known to instigate the hatching of eggs, so after one round of vacuuming, it is smart to vacuum again to suck up the larvae or newly adult fleas that were once out of reach.

To help outside of vacuuming, many people sprinkle baking soda onto the carpet or furniture as baking soda can dry out the fleas and kill them before a second vacuuming. After the baking soda has been sprinkled onto the area and allowed to do its work, you can vacuum again and see if that helps stimulate some of the eggs out of their shells.

Flea Removal

In some severe cases, steam cleaning can be helpful before beginning the vacuuming process. The heat from the steam can kill both adult fleas and larvae, but may not be able to penetrate the eggs. An insecticide is not harmful to eggs, so this is why vacuuming and steaming is more effective if completed before any sort of insecticide is used. The insecticide will still need to be used in most cases, but vacuuming, steaming, and cleaning should be completed first.

Any bedding or pillows will need to be thoroughly washed in hot and soapy water before it is allowed back into the home. In severe cases, bedding may need to be thrown away.

Because of how small fleas are, it can be extremely difficult to thoroughly take care of removal. Mighty Men Pest Control has the knowledge and experience to guide you through the process. When completing a flea removal, you want it to be properly completed the first time. Any mishaps can result in a quick re-infestation. Mighty Men Pest Control can help you prevent any returning visitors.
